Happy 81st birthday to guitarist Ritchie Blackmore.

In its entirety, the historic September 1969 performance of the Concerto for Group and Orchestra, performed by Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Malcolm Arnold. The concerto, comprising three movements, was written by Deep Purple organist Jon Lord.

The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize recipient is the only non-president to to remembered with a national holiday. A special holiday presentation of the rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. This 1970 work is loosely based on the Gospel accounts of the Passion. The work interprets the psychology of Jesus and other characters, with much of the plot centered on Judas, who is dissatisfied with how Jesus steers his disciples. Contemporary attitudes, sensibilities and slang pervade the lyrics. There are allusions to modern life and then-current political events. The part of Jesus was sung by Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), with Murray Head at Judas, Michael d'Abo as King Herod, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, and Barry Dennen at Pilate.
